What are ex-demo cars and should I buy one?

An ex-demo, also known as an ex-demonstrator, is a dealership’s display model that is now available to purchase. The car may have been used as a display model in the showroom, for test drives or by the dealership’s employees. Therefore, an ex-demo car may have anything from a few hundred to a few thousand miles on the clock and are often available at discounted prices.

Why should I buy an ex-demo car?

ex-demo cars at a dealership

The main benefit of buying an ex-demonstrator from a dealership is that you’re likely to get a discount, when compared to buying the same car new. Furthermore, while the car isn’t brand new, the dealership has been showing the car to prospective buyers meaning that it is likely to have been kept in excellent condition and have minimal aesthetic faults.

Another benefit of buying an ex-demo car is that you may be able to get a car with a generous spec, as demonstrator cars are used to sell a car and may include premium features. Whilst not always the case, you may find that there are optional extras and upgrades available, such as a panoramic roof, that you wouldn’t get as standard.

What are the disadvantages of buying an ex-demonstrator?

Whilst you may feel like you’re getting a great deal buying an ex-demo car, there are things to consider before signing on the dotted line. Similar to if you were to buy a pre-registered car, you won’t be the first legal owner of the vehicle as it will have been registered to the dealership already. This may have a negative impact when you come to sell your car, due to there being two previous owners.

Also, the car has been used by the dealership so will have covered some miles and might not be on the latest registration plate. Whilst demonstrator cars should have been kept in good condition, it is important to carry out your own checks on the car before purchasing to ensure there are no faults.
