Last updated June 6th, 2025

If you’re ready to sell your car and make the switch to a new one, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement.

However, while many cars on the market offer impressive styling and features, it’s also important to consider their potential future resale value.

Depreciation is a major cost factor for car owners. So, if you want your money to go further, choosing a model that holds its value well is key.

To help make your decision easier, we’ve created a quick explainer on why some cars retain more value than others – and curated a list of 10 cars that offer strong value retention in 2025.

Why do cars hold their value?

  • Brand recognition

Cars from brands known for reliability, performance, and prestige tend to retain their value better thanks to higher consumer confidence.

  • Running costs

The cost of living is a key concern for many drivers, meaning cars that are economical to run (e.g. cheaper to fuel, tax, and insure) often command higher resale values.

  • Technology

Cars with modern and desirable technology (e.g. head-up display, parking cameras, cross-traffic alert, keyless entry, and climate control) are more appealing to used buyers.

  • Warranty

Cars with longer warranties (e.g. Toyota’s 10-year/100,000-mile cover) often retain more value thanks to the extra reassurance this provides.

  • Demand

Popular used car models often have higher resale values, especially if the level of market demand exceeds the available supply.

  • Condition and mileage

A car in pristine mechanical and cosmetic condition will command a higher price than an identical damaged motor.

Mileage also comes into play; a low mileage often translates to a higher resale value. High mileage cars typically sell for less as they’re more prone to mechanical faults.

However, a high mileage motor may continue to run reliably for years, if you keep on top of repairs and maintenance. Having the full complement of paperwork to show you’ve taken care of it may reassure prospective buyers and give its value a boost.

  • Service history

A comprehensive service history demonstrates that you’ve taken steps to keep your car in good working order.

If your car has a full service history, this means you have the paperwork to prove it was serviced at the recommended intervals, along with invoices for any other repairs carried out.

Keeping your car in good condition can help with value retention.

To get the full picture, pay attention to the depreciation rate for the specific model you’re considering.

Top 10 slow-depreciating car models

1. Lamborghini Urus

Lamborghini Urus

New RRP: £186,509

Resale value at 36 months: £139,900

Value retained: 75.0%

The Lamborghini Urus offers a rare mix of breathtaking performance, luxury, and everyday utility. Although capable of covering 0-62mph in a sprightly 3.5 seconds, it has a surprisingly comfortable ride thanks to the excellent air suspension.

The clever active anti-roll bar and four-wheel steering ensure smoother cornering than many smaller cars, while the extra-large tyres provide all the grip you need!

Inside the cabin, everything looks suitably sturdy and luxurious. The dual-screen infotainment system is sharp and intuitive. There’s ample legroom for the driver, front and rear passengers. However, the slopping roofline at the back means anyone over six feet tall will scrape the ceiling.

The Urus offers excellent value retention, but the high price tag means you’re still looking at an average value loss of over £45,000 by the three-year mark. Therefore, while it technically sits at the top of our list, you’ll find more economical options further down.

2. Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS

Porsche Cayman GT4

Porsche’s 718 Cayman GT4 RS combines prestige with razor-sharp performance and pure driving thrills.

It delivers a mighty 493bhp and 332lb ft of torque - and a blistering top speed of 196mph. The sprint from 0-62 mph takes just 3.4 seconds and the sound of the 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine working in harmony will be music to the ears of any petrolhead.

The steering is remarkably precise and the grip reassuringly sturdy, which translates to an exhilarating driving experience.

Thanks to lightweight design choices such as carbon-fibre reinforced plastic for the bonnet and front wings, fabric door pulls, and reduced insulation, the kerbweight is just 1,413kg, meaning nothing will slow you down.

The Cayman GT4 RS holds its value very well thanks to its impressive performance, limited production and collectability.

3. Land Rover Defender 110 P300e

Reaching 0–62mph in 7.6 seconds is impressive for such a capable and heavy-duty machine, especially one that boasts air suspension, an active rear differential, and the stability of all-wheel drive.

It’s quieter than rivals such as the Jeep Wrangler and comfortable even on longer journeys thanks to the supportive upholstery and soft suspension. Drivers also benefit from smart features such as lane keep assist, three-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, and Keyless Go.

This plug-in hybrid variant features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a 105kW electric motor with a range of up to 31 miles.

The G-Class AMG 63 is a powerful upmarket SUV that carries the spirit of the W460 whilst adding modern tweaks and flourishes.

Despite weighing 2.5 tonnes, the G-Class AMG 63 handles surprisingly well, thanks to the new AMG Active Ride Control hydraulic system. Drivers benefit from a wide-spring-rate, a stark reduction in rolling movement, and much-improved cornering. The steering is also more responsive than the standard G-Class.

Mercedes offers a vast array of interior customisation options with the G-Class AMG G63, including active multi-contour seats, diamond design seat graphics – and a leather–covered instrument panel.

The MBUX multimedia system features augmented reality navigation, while the Burmester® 3D surround sound system makes sure every note resonates perfectly.

Porsche 911 GT3

Resale value at 36 months: £101,050

Value retained: 67.79%

Porsche’s 911 GT3 boasts a muscular 9,000rpm six-cylinder engine that takes it from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds. With a top speed of 194mph and aggressive winged styling, it’s sure to turn heads.

While many 911s have start/stop switches, the GT3 keeps a rotary start switch, providing the quick response of a turnkey, ideal if you stall on a circuit. This six-speed manual edition features the same short-shift lever used in the 911 S/T.

Although it’s a force to be reckoned with on the circuit, the GT3 is also a surprisingly driveable road car.

Thanks to all these strengths, the GT3 offers impressive value retention at the three-year mark, holding on to more than £100,000 of its original RRP.

The Naim audio system ensures a high-end sonic experience, while the heads-up display makes navigating the roads clear and intuitive.

Drivers also benefit from a host of standard safety features such as occupant-protection, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, a 3D surround camera, rear-traffic monitoring, traffic sign recognition and an adaptive speed limiter.

The interior brings together meticulously crafted leather and woodwork and cutting-edge technology. The seats offer excellent comfort, support, and even a massage option.

7. Toyota Land Cruiser (2.8D Invincible)

Toyota Land Cruiser

New RRP: £74,995

Resale value at 36 months: £47,950

Value retained: 63.94%

If you’re in the market for a reliable 4x4 that shines equally off-road, the Toyota Land Cruiser is an excellent option.

It utilises a 210bhp 2.8-litre engine that’s sourced from the Toyota Hilux, along with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Its low-range gearing, Torsen centre differential, and rear electronic differential provide first-class off-road performance.

The Land Cruiser’s history can be traced back to the 1950s; the first iteration was based on the original Willys Jeep before evolving into what we know today.

Toyota have increased the comfort and refinement with each successive generation – and this latest edition doesn’t disappoint. Despite its slightly retro-inspired exterior, the cabin is thoroughly contemporary, offering a mix of durable surfaces and elegant flourishes.

There’s 130 litres of boot space in seven-seat mode, although this can be increased to 620 litres with the back row of seats folded forward - or up to 2,000 litres with the middle row also folded.

Finally, the Land Cruiser comes with a three-year/60,000-mile warranty that can be extended up to 10 years/100,000 miles if serviced at a Toyota dealership.

Dacia Duster

New RRP: £18,745

Resale value at 36 months: £11,875

Value retained: 63.35%

Now in its third generation, the new Duster sports chunkier styling and durable cladding.

Eco-conscious buyers will be pleased to know that parts of the exterior are made from ‘Starkle’, a unique, robust plastic that contains up 20% reused polypropylene - and has an eye-catching speckled effect, meaning it doesn’t need paint and reduces the visibility of scratches!

The Duster is a competent small SUV and despite the lack of frills, it can take on school runs and muddy trails with aplomb. It’s a good option for families; the tough interior materials and grippy mats are made with kids, dogs, and weekend getaways in mind.

Engine options include a smooth full hybrid, a punchy mild-hybrid, and a petrol-LPG bi-fuel setup for low-cost, long-range driving. When on the road, the Duster offers better handling and comfort than before, along with surprising off-road capability, something few rivals at this price point can match!

When you consider the low RRP and running costs, solid reliability, and the reassurance of a seven-year warranty, the Duster is an excellent value proposition.

Despite being the cheapest car on our list, it retains value better than you might expect, thanks to a pervasive appetite for reliable budget-friendly motoring.

9. Porsche Macan 2.0T

Porsche Macan

New RRP: £55,675

Resale value at 36 months: £35,100

Value retained: 63.04%

The Macan offers a more accessible entry point to the Porsche brand, with the starting RRP sitting only slightly above the 718 Cayman.

This nimble SUV excels by combining Porsche’s sporty character with practicality, making it a great option for anyone seeking a fun drive without sacrificing utility.

There’s a choice of two petrol engines: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with the base and Macan T trims, and a punchier 2.9-litre V6 with the S and GTS trims. The latter races from 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds. All trims come with a smooth seven-speed PDK gearbox.

The handling is precise and responsive - and you can also opt for air suspension to boost ride comfort.

Whilst not the roomiest or most economical SUV on the market, the Macan is tremendous fun to drive. It holds its value well thanks to an ample supply of used buyers.

10. Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

New RRP: £82,360

Resale value at 36 months: £50,175

Value retained: 60.9%

The GLE Coupé is a sportier interpretation of the standard GLE SUV. Despite shedding some height (and a little practicality), it offers smart looks, a premium interior, and plenty of modern tech.

The 350de and 400e PHEV versions combine a petrol or diesel engine with electric power to deliver an impressive electric-only range of 66 miles. Both are great company car options, thanks to the 9% benefit-in-kind (BiK) rate for the 2025/26 tax year.

All versions benefit from air suspension and solid handling. The cabin is plush and modern and there’s plenty of legroom, although the headroom isn’t quite as generous.

The MBUX infotainment system comprises two 12.3-inch screens. All the information that would traditionally be displayed on dials and counters is instead presented on these screens. Plus, the smart augmented reality sat nav makes getting from A to B even more intuitive!

While the RRP is on the steeper side, the GLE Coupé has enough prestige, luxury and performance touches to retain more value than most of its rivals.
