New Year, New You: How Brits Want To Improve Themselves in 2018

It’s the dawn of a new year, time for a fresh start and the beginning of a new you! Whether we want to be healthier, get a new job or learn a new language, we all have ambitions we want to achieve, but do we Brits have the motivation to reach them? conducted a survey of 1,300 adults to find out what is it that Brits are striving for, what they are willing to do to reach their goals and what could hold them back.



A lot of Brits simply want to be a better version of themselves. Modern day lives are becoming busier and busier with long daily commutes, an obsession with social media and a demanding work life making it difficult to take some time out for yourself. However, an inspiring 87% of Brits are determined to focus on themselves this year and the areas in their lives they want to improve. Whether this means a financial improvement, a more fulfilled lifestyle or spending more time with loved ones it is important to find time to take care of yourself.

We often make New Year resolutions and have the best intentions to stick to them, but after a while, motivation to keep going can start to relax. That’s why we’re impressed that 40% of Brits succeed in sticking to their goals all year round. have conducted a survey to find out what is it that Brits are striving for in 2018 and almost half want a healthier lifestyle

Healthy lifestyle

Almost half of Brits’ main goal is to live a healthier lifestyle by joining the gym, ditching the takeaway after a night out and to drink less, with nearly 40% wanting to lose weight. This can be one of the hardest goals to achieve as it takes constant motivation to see it through. For some, it all begins with fitness and a whopping 90% of those who wanted to join a gym succeeded in doing so to begin their journey towards a healthier lifestyle.


Changing habits

Habits are tricky to master, the good ones can be difficult to begin and the bad ones are even harder to stop, but over 60% wish they were better at conquering this. The positive habits Brits have chosen to work towards their goal of self-improvement include going to bed an hour earlier, reading more and walking more. However, some of the most frequently mentioned bad habits that they aim to stop is biting nails, smoking and drinking, but half of the population still manage to do so. have found that 50% of Brits manage to stop their bad habits, like biting nails

Obstacles to overcome

We all have the best intentions to stick to our new goals and to remain determined to reach that better version of ourselves, but sometimes, due to one reason or another, we can hit a road block and turn to our friends and family for that extra boost to continue. However, only 21% of those who were surveyed claimed they can’t get motivated to stick to their resolutions, and just 2 in 5 find themselves too busy, therefore, with some extra encouragement, the majority can succeed. Some people are so determined to succeed they are willing to spend over £2000 to stick to a new hobby, whether this is to purchase a gym membership, a more expensive food bill to fill the cupboards with healthy food and revamping the wardrobe.
